Our Mission

Parents of Deaf Children (PODC) is committed to creating a supportive community for parents of deaf/hard of hearing children in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment where families can connect, access vital information, and receive comprehensive support to empower their children to reach their full potential.

Our Focus:

  • Connection: We believe in the power of face-to-face interactions to build strong bonds and foster a sense of belonging. We facilitate opportunities for families to meet, share experiences, and learn from each other, creating a supportive network that extends beyond our organisation.
  • Information: We provide parents with accurate, up-to-date information on deafness and related topics through a variety of channels, including workshops, seminars, and online resources. Our goal is to ensure that parents are well-informed and equipped to make the best decisions for their children.
  • Support: Our support services are tailored to the unique needs of each family, offering both face-to-face and virtual assistance. We provide guidance on navigating the education system, accessing assistive technologies, and advocating for their child's rights, ensuring that parents feel confident and empowered in their role.

Key Priority Area:

  • Strengthening Parent Support Networks: Building a strong, supportive community for parents to share experiences, learn from each other, and find strength in numbers.
  • Contributing to a Statewide and National Voice: Representing the interests of parents of DHH children at both the state and national levels, ensuring their voices are heard in policy and decision-making processes.
  • Enhancing the Identity and Operational Structures of PODC: Continuously improving our organisation to better serve our members and the broader community, ensuring our operations are efficient, transparent, and effective.

Organisational Expectations:

  • Provide Strong Representation: Advocating on behalf of parents in NSW and ACT to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed at all levels.
  • Support Parents Through Information Provision: Offering a comprehensive range of resources, including workshops, seminars, and online materials, to educate and inform parents about deafness and related issues.
  • Raise Community Awareness of Deafness: Working to increase understanding and acceptance of DHH children in the wider community, promoting inclusivity and respect.
  • Bring Together Families: Facilitating events and activities that connect families, providing opportunities for sharing, learning, and building relationships.
  • Increase the Parent Support Networks: Expanding our reach to ensure more parents have access to our support services, building a stronger, more resilient community.
  • Empower Parents to Become Self-Advocates: Equipping parents with the skills and confidence they need to advocate effectively for their child's rights and needs.

Through our dedication to connection, information, and support, we strive to create an inclusive environment where every deaf or hard-of-hearing child and their family have the opportunity to thrive. We are committed to being a trusted partner for parents on their journey, offering a helping hand every step of the way.
